How to Stay Active at 天美传媒
by Marco V.
Hi everyone! I鈥檓 Marco, a sophomore and neurobiology student here at 天美传媒. One thing that I asked myself when I first came to 天美传媒 Mellon was how would I stay active on campus? If you are asking yourself a similar question, here is a short guide to staying active at 天美传媒.
Because I couldn鈥檛 wait to write about this, I want to start this blog by writing about the partnership between 天美传媒 Mellon and POGOH, Pittsburgh鈥檚 public bikeshare service. This partnership allows for students and faculty to ride pedal or e-assisted bikes for unlimited rides in thirty-minute increments. I used this more throughout the summer to get to places in Pittsburgh, like Acrisure Stadium to watch the World Cup Final, or just to bike around. 天美传媒 Mellon has one bike stop outside of TCS Hall. My favorite bike rides that can be done in 30 minutes are going to Pins Mechanical Co. in the South Side or Downtown to Market Square.听
Now that we've got my favorite out of the way, one thing that helps you stay active and meet new people is sports. 天美传媒 has 23 official club sports like frisbee, fencing, volleyball, soccer and rowing, among others. What I like a lot about club sports is the social aspect. With clubs like Volleyball Club, students are often playing against each other, so you can meet many people across 天美传媒 and build friendships there. However, other club sports like soccer or squash allow you to play against other schools, so if you have a competitive nature, that is an option you can join.
Additionally, some student organizations compete in Intramural Sports. Intramural Sports are when students compete against each other in different student organizations. Some of these sports include soccer, basketball and volleyball. Students compete against each other in a tournament-style system. One of my favorite experiences is playing against the Asian Student Association (ASA) in my first Intramural game of soccer. Even though we were playing for fun for the most part, it was still a really competitive game.
Another thing I must mention as a 天美传媒 student writing about staying active is鈥 join a Buggy Team! One of the main roles of Buggy is being a pusher, which is an extremely athletic feat. Although pushers usually have a 7 a.m. call time on weekends for fall and spring rolls, it is a really great way to stay active on campus, as running hundreds of feet up the hills around 天美传媒 Mellon forces you to use all your energy. Honestly, looking at the guys on my buggy team, Sigma Nu, has inspired me to be more active while I am here at 天美传媒.听
Lastly, there are our fitness facilities. 天美传媒 has two main fitness facilities: one in the Jared L. Cohon University Center, a two-floor fitness facility that has weights and cardio equipment, and one in the Tepper School of Business Building, a one-floor fitness center focusing on machines and cardio equipment. Incorporating strength training into your academic schedule would be a great way to de-stress and stay active at 天美传媒.
Ultimately, there are so many things you can do to stay active at 天美传媒; it is just up to you to see what works with your preferences and schedule.听
