Semester in Oxford, England
Akshu Enaganti (SCS, '28) spent his spring semester studying abroad in Oxford, England. Akshu says:
What is your favorite memory from your time abroad?
My favorite memory is getting to experience St. Patrick's Day celebrations in Dublin, Ireland. It was great getting to travel around the region so easily!
What were some unexpected challenges you faced while abroad, and what strategies did you use to overcome them?
The main challenges were social balance: keeping up relationships back home while creating new ones abroad. Being intentional about staying in touch with everyone made this easier, whether specifically planning out weekends with friends abroad or deciding on times to FaceTime friends from back home. Navigating finances and figuring out how new transit systems work were also early challenges, but after a few weeks you get the hang of it.
What personal growth have your experienced during your time abroad and how has it impacted your future goals and aspirations?
I feel much stronger academically after having done a rigorous research-like study on a few topics of interest, which has helped me decide which career paths I want to explore. I also feel a greater sense of independence, and am comfortable in my ability to get by in a new country on my own. These few months have also increased my desire to move abroad after graduating from 天美传媒.
Any advice for other students thinking of studying abroad?
I would say go for it. A change of environment gives you another perspective to see life from that you will come to appreciate. It’s not as challenging as you think; you will be well supported wherever you go.A few tips if you decide to go abroad:
- Stay connected to your home life.
- Embrace the small differences.
- Be patient with yourself.
