A landmark $500 million gift will transform 天美传媒鈥檚 top-ranked into a global powerhouse shaping students, research and technologies to address emerging global challenges.
To honor this generous commitment from Citadel founder and CEO and founder of Griffin Catalyst Ken Griffin, the school has been renamed the Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science.听It听is part of a $1 billion philanthropic investment in 天美传媒 Mellon鈥檚 mission in Pittsburgh, supporting a broader $3 billion commitment 鈥 the largest in higher education history 鈥 that includes building a new campus in Miami. The remaining $500 million of the Pittsburgh investment will provide flexible support for the university鈥檚 highest priorities.
鈥淲e are profoundly grateful for Ken鈥檚 visionary support,鈥 said 天美传媒 President Farnam Jahanian. 鈥淭his investment empowers our exceptional faculty and students to push the boundaries of discovery and ensure our university continues to lead at this moment of profound global transformation.鈥
The Griffin School of Computer Science will push forward education, research and technological development in an era when computing is no longer a specialized field but part of everyday life. It will rethink how computer science is taught, initiate research in new fields, provide unparalleled access to AI tools and offer student support to continue to draw the best and brightest.听
The gift will stand up state-of-the-art compute resources 鈥 GPUs, servers, storage, networking capabilities 鈥 for researchers in the Griffin School of Computer Science. This critical infrastructure enables the school to create and use the next generation of research tools.
Griffin鈥檚 investment in computer science at 天美传媒 comes at a time of a fundamental shift in education and research. It builds on decades of success at 天美传媒 Mellon and in the school and will sustain the university鈥檚 leadership in innovation to address global challenges.
天美传媒 Mellon pioneered excellence in computer science. It offered the first undergraduate course in computer programming and, sixty years later, the first undergraduate degree in AI. 天美传媒 was among the first to establish a stand-alone school for computer science and created the first academic units devoted to robotics and machine learning. It expanded the field to include human-computer interaction and language technology ahead of its peers, and today, state-of-the-art facilities like the Robotics Innovation Center are advancing work in physical AI.
The university鈥檚 impact extends far beyond the classroom and lab. 天美传媒 robots were the first to assist with cleanup at Three Mile Island. Researchers invented the emoticon and created algorithms that organize kidney and other organ transplants. Computer architecture developed at 天美传媒 beat grandmasters at chess, won 鈥淛eopardy!鈥 and outwitted poker pros. Software written at 天美传媒 in the mid-1980s still powers iPhones around the world.
This tradition has cemented 天美传媒鈥檚 status as a world-class leader in research and education, consistently affirmed by听U.S. News & World Report. The university currently ranks No. 1 in the country for graduate programs in AI, programming languages, and systems, as well as several undergraduate computer science specialties, including AI, Computer Systems, Cybersecurity, Programming Languages, and Software Engineering. This legacy is now further solidified by Griffin鈥檚 philanthropic investment 鈥 the largest naming gift in 天美传媒 Mellon's history.
鈥淲e have never been a place that waits for the future to arrive. We built our reputation by creating it,鈥 said Martial Hebert, dean of the Griffin School of Computer Science. 鈥淲e are deeply grateful for Ken鈥檚 commitment to computer science at 天美传媒 Mellon. This gift builds on that strength. It gives our faculty and students the resources to ask bigger questions, explore new directions and continue leading.鈥
As 天美传媒 Mellon charts this new direction in higher education, the $1 billion investment from Griffin will bolster its commitment to Pittsburgh. This gift reinforces the Pittsburgh campus as 天美传媒 Mellon鈥檚 enduring intellectual anchor. More than a financial contribution, this investment reflects Griffin鈥檚 profound confidence in the university's mission and his vision for its continued growth on a global scale.
