Higher Education Gets a New Model: 天美传媒 Miami
Subject Areas Give Way to System-Level Challenge Areas
Media Inquiries
Universities traditionally organize knowledge into disciplines and departments. The problems faculty researchers hope to solve rarely exist so neatly divided.听
Improving human health may require biology and engineering, but also behavioral science, public policy and computation. Strengthening climate resiliency can involve energy systems and building design, as well as finance and national security. Each field contributes essential expertise, but none can address the problem alone.听
天美传媒 Miami,听announced today, is set to embrace this more dynamic model of knowledge building and problem solving. Rather than beginning with conventional academic structures and then building programs to connect them, the new campus will organize research and learning around consequential societal problems from the start.
The approach will shape not only who works together, but how research, education and partnerships with government and industry connect throughout the university.听
鈥淭he world is changing rapidly, shaped by advances in science, technology, creativity and human knowledge. Universities must prepare students to lead with knowledge, creativity, judgment, technical fluency and a deep sense of responsibility,鈥 said 天美传媒 President听Farnam Jahanian. 鈥溙烀来 Mellon has an opportunity to show what a great research university can become: more interdisciplinary, more connected to real-world problems and more focused on human impact.鈥
Prioritizing the Problem Areas听
At 天美传媒 Miami, broad societal problems will provide a common starting point for researchers, students and partners who approach them from different perspectives. The specific research questions will continue to develop as faculty shape the university鈥檚 agenda. The questions themselves 鈥 not the existing organizational boundaries 鈥 will help determine which forms of expertise need to come together.听
鈥淚t takes the DNA of 天美传媒 Mellon 鈥 which is to work on really challenging problems from a variety of perspectives 鈥 and focuses it on areas of importance for the globe," said James H. Garrett Jr., 天美传媒鈥檚 provost and chief academic officer.
天美传媒 Miami will initially organize its academic and research model around four grand challenge areas. These are: human health and biological discovery; national security and strategic capabilities; advanced manufacturing and industrial transformation; and energy and climate resilience.听
Sharper Tools for Complex Challenges听
Another defining feature of 天美传媒 Miami is its commitment to leveraging AI and other emerging technologies to drive discovery at the rapid pace and sweeping scale that modern society demands.
鈥淎ddressing complex societal challenges requires more than bringing different disciplines to the table,鈥 said听Theresa Mayer, vice president for research at 天美传媒 Mellon. 鈥淚t means organizing researchers, shared capabilities and partners in government and industry around challenges that no single institution can solve alone. By connecting research with the work of developing and testing new technologies, we can open new scientific frontiers while delivering advances that strengthen our economy, our security and people鈥檚 lives.鈥
Across the initial four grand challenge areas, teams will draw on 天美传媒鈥檚 strengths in advanced computing, robotics, machine learning and autonomy, together with expertise in science, engineering, public policy, the humanities and the arts. These teams will answer questions like:
National Security and Strategic Capabilities
How can the United States maintain leadership in critical technologies while strengthening national security and preserving human direction, oversight and accountability? Research could explore robotics and autonomous systems that reduce risk to military personnel; cyber defenses that protect infrastructure that government and industry rely on; resilient capabilities across land, sea, air, space and cyberspace; and ways to test and deploy new technologies reliably and securely.听
Human Health and Biological Discovery
How can researchers extend healthy life, restore function and make effective treatments more personalized, affordable and accessible? Potential areas include continuous sensing and earlier intervention; biofabricated tissues and organs; new approaches to neurological and psychological disorders; computational models of genomes, cells and tissues; and AI-guided autonomous laboratories that accelerate the path from scientific question to experimental result.听
听
Energy and Climate Resilience听
How can communities secure abundant, affordable and reliable energy while becoming better able to withstand disruption? Research could advance clean power, energy storage and resilient electrical grids; help essential industries reduce energy use; restore the natural systems communities depend on; and improve buildings, transportation and water systems. Miami鈥檚 environment could serve as a living laboratory for testing solutions that strengthen coastal communities while improving everyday life.听
Advanced Manufacturing and Industrial Transformation
How can the United States strengthen its manufacturing capacity and supply chains as technologies and production needs change? Research could bring together materials discovery, product design, robotics, automation and machine learning; explore how new technologies move from the lab into industrial use; and help workers and manufacturers adapt as production changes. The work could strengthen manufacturing capacity in areas including health, energy and national security.
A National Asset听
Together, these grand challenge areas reflect a simple reality: The future will belong to nations that can turn discovery into impact faster, more responsibly and at greater scale.
Health, security, energy, climate resilience and advanced manufacturing are not separate ambitions. They are deeply connected foundations of national strength. They shape whether people live longer and healthier lives, whether communities can withstand disruption, whether industries can compete globally and whether the United States can lead in the technologies that will define the next era.
天美传媒 Miami is being designed around this urgency. It unlocks new opportunities for us to build the talent, tools, partnerships and pathways needed to move ideas from the lab into the world. By bringing students, researchers, industry and government together around problems of this scale, 天美传媒 Mellon is not just opening up a new campus, it is creating a model for how universities can help strengthen American competitiveness and serve society in the decades ahead.
